FIVE Ipswich residents have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the local community in the 2025 Ipswich Australia Day Awards.
The prestigious awards celebrate those who have made a significant impact in areas such as social welfare, culture, youth leadership, and sport.
Citizen of the Year: Martin Shaw
For his tireless work as president of Wounded Heroes Australia, a crisis support group dedicated to assisting Australian Defence Force members and their families. Mr Shaw, who has led the organisation since 2011, was commended for his hands-on approach in supporting veterans while managing the day-to-day operations of the centre in Bundamba.
Senior Citizen of the Year: Jan White
A former nurse and long-time volunteer at Ipswich Hospice Care. Ms White’s contributions to the hospice, including her past role as a director, have been pivotal in ensuring its continued success. She remains dedicated to palliative care and is a life member of Palliative Care Queensland.
Young Citizen of the Year: Ryan White
Recognised for his exceptional leadership and fundraising efforts as house captain at St Edmund’s College. Mr White played a key role in the school’s annual charity bike ride, Skool 2 Schoolies, raising $23,000 of the $60,000 total to benefit Ipswich Hospice Care and St Vincent de Paul.
Cultural Award: John Martin Del Rosario Nieva
For his unwavering commitment to promoting multiculturalism in Ipswich. As president of the Philippines-Australia Multicultural Association (PAMA), Mr Nieva has organised numerous community events, including the popular Springfest festival. His volunteer work with the Cancer Council of Australia has also helped raise thousands of dollars for cancer research.
Sport and Recreation Award: Stephen Rogers An impressive career as a hockey umpire, capped by his role officiating the men’s gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Mr Rogers, who was also named Official of the Year at the 2024 Ipswich Sports Awards, has been a figure in the sport for over three decades.
Community Group of the Year: Wounded Heroes Australia
For its ongoing support of veterans and vulnerable members of the community. The organisation provides vital services such as emotional and financial assistance, emergency housing, and daily essentials.
