THE landmark former clock tower at the central cinema building is being considered by Ipswich City Council for advertising space.

A development application to allow advertising on the Council-owned tower has been submitted for consideration.

A report to the Economic and Cultural Development Committee said the intent of turning the tower into advertising space was “to re-establish this landmark corner whilst supporting events, community notices, the occupiers of the precinct and the wider Ipswich Central”.

There are 29 tenants in the Nicholas Street precinct development.

Hello Harry’s started fitout to a new tenancy late last month with an expected opening date in early September.

Vapiano continues with its fit-out works and is also expecting to open in September in time for the school holidays.

The report said the precinct was experiencing improved leasing interest for many of the remaining tenancies, with another new tenancy expected to be presented soon.

More than $311 million has been spent on the Nicholas Street redevelopment.

Works to the cinema building cost $72 million, the Commonwealth Hotel redevelopment cost $16.7 million, the Civic Project cost $183.9 million and the Retail Project cost $38.5 million.
