WELCOME to 2025. At Ipswich council, the year begins where it left off, with some in the chamber struggling to maintain cordial relationships during livestreamed meetings. Perhaps the holiday break will bring some new year resolutions to improve things, but I’m not hopeful.
Fortunately, the majority of items before council are discussed and voted on without the debate being uncomfortable to watch.
For example, the recent approval by council to spend $77.4 million for the detailed design and construction of upgrades to Ripley and Fischer Roads was a significant positive decision.
Long overdue, but better late than never, the first stage of the Ripley Rd upgrade between the Cunningham Highway and Monterea Rd is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Council meetings resume on January 30, with committee meetings starting again on February 18.
One thing to watch for this year is a possible re-examination of council’s media policy which had its origins relatively recently under administration. This policy sets how council conducts media relations. It continues to be a bone of contention behind the scenes, with some not happy about the current situation.
Councillors should toss out this policy and allow it to be replaced with a commonsense procedure written by officers or the CEO.
I don’t know any media outlet which welcomes media releases that regularly quote four councillors. It’s not a good look.
