AS AUSTRALIA navigates an increasingly uncertain global security landscape, both major party candidates in the Federal seat of Blair have reaffirmed their support for Ipswich’s longstanding role as a strategic military stronghold.

At the heart of Ipswich’s defence identity lies RAAF Base Amberley, the nation’s largest operational Air Force base.
Established in 1940 during World War II, the base is home to major Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) units, including No. 1 Squadron (F/A-18F Super Hornet), No. 6 Squadron (EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft), and heavy-lift C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft.

Speaking on the importance of defence in the region, LNP candidate Carl Mutzelburg said recent global tensions had strengthened the need for a strong and well-funded military.

“The LNP is committed to strengthening national defence and standing by the brave men and women who serve our country,” Mr Mutzelburg said.

He criticised Labor for what he claimed was a failure to maintain adequate investment in the sector.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann defended the Albanese Government’s record, pointing to significant new funding and a commitment to rebuilding Defence capability.

“During a time of global uncertainty, there is no greater responsibility for the Federal Government than keeping Australians safe and securing our nation’s future,” Mr Neumann said.

He accused the former Coalition Government of leaving a backlog of mismanaged projects when Labor took office in 2022.

“We’re investing an additional $50.3 billion into the ADF, including bringing forward $1 billion in the 2025–26 Budget to fast-track critical acquisitions,” he said.

Ipswich’s military presence has a far-reaching economic impact, with more than 5000 personnel stationed at the base and thousands more employed in logistics, maintenance, and support industries.

According to Ipswich City Council, the base contributes over $1.4 billion to the local economy each year.

With sustained investment and strategic importance to Australia’s national defence, RAAF Base Amberley is set to expand further.
