AN Ipswich centenarian who dedicated more than a third of her life to one of the city’s most historic sporting clubs will be honoured in a special tribute from Ipswich City Council.
Doris Jeffrey passed away aged 101 in June 2024 having spent 35 years as a member of the Ipswich Croquet Club.
Council will install a plaque honouring Mrs Jeffrey on a bench seat at the club in the picturesque Queens Park.
Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee Chairman Andrew Antoniolli said Mrs Jeffrey was widely respected for her significant contribution over 35 years.
“She was active as a volunteer and held several positions on the management committee, including President, prior to the retirement,” Cr Antoniolli said.
Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said Council endorsed the tribute to Mrs Jeffrey after requests by her family and the croquet club.
“Institutions like Ipswich Croquet Club are part of our social fabric, bringing people together and making Ipswich a great place to live,” Cr Doyle said.
“But they wouldn’t exist without the dedication of people such as Doris, who was an enduring and beloved figure at the courts and heritage-listed clubhouse in Queens Park.”
