LAST Friday the Ipswich RSL Sub Branch visited Silkstone State School to take part in RSL Queensland’s “Draw to Remember” initiative in the run-up to Remembrance Day.
This is the second year that the sub-branch has reached out to schoolkids to get them engaged in commemoration and the school was just one of several on their itinerary.
This week the sub-branch has been visiting West Moreton Anglican College, Amberley State School and Ripley Central School and taking a look at the artwork from Ipswich Kindergarten.
By using the kids’ powerful artistic expression, the initiative encourages them to learn about the importance of Remembrance Day from local veterans in their area while expressing their learnings or personal stories through art.
Last year’s pilot was a huge success and now more than 8,000 students from 196 schools across the state are creating respectful tributes to those who have served and sacrificed.
RSL Queensland state president Major General Stephen Day DSC AM said he was proud to see the continuation of this meaningful initiative that supported students as they reflected on and explored their personal connection to past and present serving members of the Australian Defence Force.
He said, “As we look to the future, it is essential that we remind the community about the significance of commemorations such as Remembrance Day and ensure that the legacy of those who fought for our freedom continues.
“By engaging the next generations with age-appropriate activities, we can strengthen young Australians appreciation for those who went before them, many paying the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Ipswich RSL Sub Branch secretary Deb Wadwell said she was moved by the drawings. She said, “It was humbling to see the drawings. It brought tears to my eyes. The students were amazing and Ipswich RSL Sub Branch are so proud of all students involved with RSL Draw to Remember project. I loved it.”
