THE Ipswich Force have sent a clear message ahead of the upcoming NBL1 North season, securing the signature of rising 6’9 two-way big Phillip Deng.
For a program building towards sustained success, Deng’s signing is more than a roster addition. It’s a statement of intent.
Long, athletic and increasingly polished, 18-year-old Deng brings a dynamic blend of rim protection, energy and developing offensive skill that shapes as a perfect fit for the Force system.
Having come through the local ranks with the Ipswich Basketball Comets from a young age, Deng’s return carries both familiarity and purpose.
He is no longer a junior prospect, but a player ready to make an immediate impact.
“I’ve been playing here since grade four,” Deng said.
“It’s good to be back around guys I’ve seen coming through.”
Ipswich basketball identity Calvin Hevgold said Deng offers far more than highlight plays.
“Phillip has the obvious physical attributes, his length and hops, which produce the highlight reel blocks and dunks,” Hevgold said.
“But what’s really stood out is his maturity. His calmness, his clarity in big moments, and the way he carries himself both on the court and around the group.”
During his time in the US with Florida Coastal Prep, Deng collected a string of honours, including Florida Sun Conference First Team All-State, Florida Sun North Division Player of the Year, SEHL Reebok League Champion and BigShots National Slam First Team All-Star.
Confident in his identity as a player, Deng believes he brings a unique edge to the Force lineup.
“There’s no one really like me on the team,” he said.
“I’ll just do what I can and bring my own strengths.”
Ipswich junior coach Sean Bailey said Deng’s versatility and energy will be invaluable.
“He brings energy that lifts the group. It shows in second efforts, defensive stops and the way he competes.”
