THE Ipswich Force were unable to convert home-court advantage into victory on Saturday night, falling to the Southern Districts Spartans in both the men’s and women’s NBL1 North clashes at Ipswich Basketball Stadium.

In the men’s encounter, Ipswich battled hard but were overrun in the final quarter, going down 118-110 in a high-scoring contest.

The Force matched the Spartans blow for blow through three quarters, but a 36-point final term from the visitors proved the difference.

Veteran forward Lamar Patterson led the charge for Ipswich with a commanding 38-point performance that included five triples and nine free throws. He was well supported by Ngor Nai (25 points), William Mahoney (20), and DJ Mitchell (20 points, 10 rebounds).

Despite the offensive firepower, Ipswich couldn’t contain a late surge from Southern Districts, who were spearheaded by Tamuri Wigness with 30 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds.

Former Force centre and Ipswich junior Matthew Hodgson also made an impact against his old club with 15 points and two blocks.

The loss leaves Ipswich with work to do in the final week of the regular season as it eyes a crucial matchup against the third-placed Gold Coast Rollers next Saturday night at home.

In the earlier women’s game, the Lady Force also fell just short, losing 89-80 to a well-drilled Spartans outfit.

Despite a determined push in the final stages, Ipswich couldn’t claw back the deficit as Southern Districts held their nerve.

Kahlaijah Dean once again led the way for the Lady Force with 23 points, three assists, and two steals in a near-complete performance. Elissa Brett chipped in 21 points, while Olivia West added 13 in an efficient outing.

Ipswich found success from beyond the arc, hitting 10 threes and converting 69 per cent of its free throws, but struggled on the boards.

Southern Districts out-rebounded the home side 45-29 and capitalised on second-chance opportunities, punishing Ipswich with their efficiency inside the paint.

With finals around the corner, the Lady Force face a critical period of reflection and adjustment. Saturday’s performance showed glimpses of their potential, but also highlighted areas that must improve if they’re to make a run in the post-season.

Ipswich fans will hope both teams can bounce back next weekend in what shapes as a defining moment in their 2025 campaigns.
