A SURGE in demand for Free TAFE places has seen more than 4700 Ipswich residents enrol in fee-free training since early 2024, as locals take advantage of new pathways into high-demand jobs.
New figures released by the Federal Government show 4744 people in the Ipswich region signed up to Free TAFE between January 2024 and June 2025, contributing to more than 685,000 enrolments nationally since the initiative launched in 2023.
The program aims to boost the workforce in sectors facing critical shortages, particularly construction, care and manufacturing.
More than 190,000 courses have already been completed, helping Australians begin careers in nursing, aged care, carpentry, early childhood education and electrical trades.
Queensland continues to record strong interest in care-related training, with the Diploma of Nursing and Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care among the most popular courses. Between January 2023 and June 2025, the Diploma of Nursing alone attracted 8644 enrolments statewide.
The savings for students are substantial. Queenslanders studying a Diploma of Nursing can save up to $15,900, while those completing a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care can save up to $950 through Free TAFE.
Across Australia, care-sector courses have generated more than 185,000 enrolments, while early childhood education has drawn over 53,000 students. Construction courses have also proved highly popular, recording more than 52,000 enrolments.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said the program continued to open doors for locals wanting to upskill or change careers.
