IN WHAT was a memorable first home game for the Ipswich State High Langer Cup side, it made it two wins to open the season.

At North Ipswich Reserve against Mabel Park High, the local rugby league nursery showcased its rugby league talent with the 22-21 win.

Head coach Josh Bretherton said he was pleased with the win and performance from the team.

“Excellent win, the boys showed great resolve and composure to win it so close to the end,” he said.

“First game at home for the season and it was great to see all the families, students and community member there to support us.

“Excellent night for the boys to learn and develop from.

“We can learn that we have the ability to chase a game, be composed and win late. That is a great tool we can add to our kit.

“But we need to learn about consistency of defensive application.”

It only took three minutes for the first points to be scored when Ipswich’s captain and hooker Sam Martin crossed for a try.

Powerful prop Xzavier Timoteo bustled over with silky fullback Tom Parker also running in a major for the home side.

Having already been signed to the Broncos, Parker is proving to be another key strike weapon in this Ipswich High side, while Saifiti Saifiti performed well again, converting three from four conversions, which made the difference in the one-point win.

“Chris Simpson was outstanding at centre and put them under pressure and also did a lot of hard work,” Bretherton said.

“Tom Parker at fullback was also vital as he cleaned up so many problems and got us around the field calmly under pressure.”

On Wednesday, June 12, Ipswich High will return to North Ipswich Reserve for a second week in front of the passionate faithful aiming to make it three on the trot when it hosts Wavell State High.
