Ipswich Hospice and the Rotary Club of Goodna recently celebrated the completion of the Hospice Guest Wing Access Pathway Upgrade Project with Ipswich City Council Division 2 Councillor Paul Tully.

The project, funded by the council’s Community Funding program and the Smartygrants community projects funding for 2023/2024, aimed to improve the safety and accessibility of the pathway from the Ambulance Bay to the Guest Wing entrance of the facility.

The previous pathway consisted of brick pavers and timber deck, which created an uneven surface that posed a safety risk and caused difficulty and discomfort for patients being transported from the ambulance bay to the guest wing. The old pathway was also hard to navigate for visitors who used mobility aids or wheelchairs. Moreover, this pathway was the emergency exit route to the evacuation assembly point.

The project involved the demolition of the ground level veranda and decking, the removal of the existing paved pathway, and the installation of a concrete surface for both the ground level deck area and the pathway from the ambulance bay to the guest wing entrance. This has improved the usability and safety of the area for patients and visitors.

Hospice is grateful for the support of Goodna Rotary, who applied for and secured the grant to fund this much needed project. Hospice is also looking forward to adding an awning structure over the pavement to provide shade and comfort for the guest wing pathway and outdoor area.

Hospice also thanks the Ipswich City Council for providing funding through its Smartygrants community projects funding 2023/2024 – Round 1.

The Rotary Club of Goodna has been a loyal supporter of Ipswich Hospice Care for more than a decade, contributing funds annually to help Hospice deliver its mission of providing compassionate and dignified end of life care, as well as supporting families and bereaved members of the community who wish to be ‘at home’.

Ipswich Hospice Care relies on generous donations and grants to cover operational costs. Donations help with:

  • covering the cost of a Counselling session for a grieving family member
  • paying for one home visit by the Hospice Nurse Practitioner
  • covering part of the cost of a nurse for a shift
  • covering guests catering costs for a week
  • assisting with the cost of infrastructure.

The Rotary Club of Goodna meets every Monday evening at 6.30pm for 7.00pm at the Springfield Tavern.
