IPSWICH local Leanne Walker was honoured with Life Membership at Forum Communicators’ recent biannual conference, recognising more than two decades of leadership, mentorship and service.

Well known across the region, Ms Walker taught for many years at West Moreton Anglican College and proudly notes that her grandchildren are seventh-generation Ipswichians.

She has been a driving force in Bremer Forum (Ipswich) for 26 years, during which she has built lasting friendships, supported and mentored countless members, and consistently embodied the confidence, generosity and encouragement that define the Forum community.

In accepting her award, she reflected on the future of communication and highlighted two themes she believes will shape the years ahead.

The first was the relationship between artificial intelligence and human connection. While AI continues to evolve rapidly and excels in processing information, Ms Walker emphasised that authentic emotional and social engagement remains uniquely human.

She noted that this makes it more important than ever to strengthen the skills that foster genuine connection – attentive listening, thoughtful impromptu speaking, clear communication, and the ability to craft and share stories that resonate.

The second theme centred on nurturing the brain through lifelong communication practice. She reminded members that maintaining cognitive health is essential, and activities such as constructing speeches, researching content, responding with insight and developing impromptu speaking skills help strengthen neural pathways.

While some decline in neural connections is natural with age, Ms Walker said that ongoing cognitive challenge helps preserve a valuable “reserve” that supports long-term brain health.

Bremer Forum in Ipswich welcomes anyone interested in improving their communication skills, strengthening personal connection and keeping their mind active.

The group meets at Ipswich Jets Leagues Club, 15 Downs St, North Ipswich, on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. For details, visit beconfident.org.au, or email [email protected].
