THE Ipswich Lions Club, a cornerstone of community service for more than 60 years, is facing a critical challenge as its aging membership struggles to attract new volunteers.

With just 19 active members, many in their 70s and 80s, the club is concerned that it could face a decline in the next 5 to 10 years unless younger individuals step up to carry on its mission.

Phillip Ungerer, a 20-year member of the Ipswich Lions Club, said at a recent board meeting that club members acknowledged the reality of their situation – an aging workforce and lack of new recruits.

“We’ve always been about serving the Ipswich community, but today we’re mostly a fundraising club – running sausage sizzles and selling Christmas cakes just to gather the funds we need to support those less fortunate,” he said.

The club’s membership is predominantly made up of seniors, many of whom are dealing with medical issues, and only a handful of younger members can contribute due to work and family commitments.

“We understand that people are busy, but it’s difficult to continue with such a small group of volunteers,” Mr Ungerer said.

“We need new, enthusiastic members to join and help us continue the work we’ve done for over six decades.”

The Ipswich Lions Club has contributed to numerous community projects over the years, from local charity drives to supporting those in need.

However, as membership has dwindled, so too has its ability to engage in larger, more impactful service activities.

The club is now seeking ways to not only raise awareness of its mission but also attract new members, especially younger individuals who may be looking for an outlet to give back to their community.

“We’re reaching out to the community for help,” Mr Ungerer said.

“We’re hopeful that with more visibility and awareness, people will see the value in joining a service club like ours. We’ve done so much for Ipswich, and we want to keep that legacy alive.”
