IPSWICH Community Gallery will host a unique exhibition from August 29 to September 7 exploring the creative possibilities of paper.
Titled On a Roll: Contemporary Interpretations of the Paper Scroll, the exhibition presents 42 works by 23 artists from Papermakers and Artists Queensland (PAQ), reimagining the traditional scroll through modern techniques.
Visitors can expect an innovative display of scroll-inspired works featuring folding, stitching, printing, layering and sculpting. Many pieces are created using handmade paper, crafted by artists from locally sourced plant fibres or recycled materials, emphasising sustainability and artistry.
The exhibition invites audiences to reflect on the scroll’s rich cultural history while exploring its reinvention as a contemporary art form.
Each work stretches the concept of the scroll – both literally and figuratively – showcasing paper as a versatile medium for storytelling and design.
Formed in 1993, PAQ is a community of paper artists dedicated to sharing skills and fostering creativity.
The group embraces diverse practices including paper sculpture, artist books, calligraphy, printmaking, marbling, origami and papermaking using recycled and natural fibres.
With around 50 members, the organisation welcomes new artists eager to explore paper in all its forms.
“On a Roll” reflects PAQ’s commitment to making paper art accessible and relevant to today’s audiences.
