GOING by comments on social media there’s a lot of very disappointed people after a shock decision by Ipswich Hospital Foundation (IHF) to cancel Park2Park after 20 years.

Park2Park regulars had already been busy getting teams together and were looking forward to the 2025 event.

Only 12 months ago, IHF called the event “iconic” when it celebrated 20 years and raised $30,000.

Over the years it has been reported the number of participants peaked at more than 2000 runners. Recent changes didn’t cater for more serious athletes.

In a statement posted to its website, IHF said the cost of running large scale events was a significant consideration in the decision to cancel, and acknowledged Park2Park was a cherished community event. In the pursuit of relentless fundraising, perhaps IHF current management and board have forgotten the original intent of Park2Park was to help improve the overall health of the community.

The initial concept catered for everyone, while it also attracted elite runners. It helped address our city’s unhealthy eating and obese issues by getting families to take part.

Fundraising was considered a bonus, with the emphasis on participation of all age groups and abilities.

IHF’s statement didn’t account for the positive healthy impact Park2Park has made on the community.

Is there another community minded organisation that can fill this void in 2026?
