WITH recent headlines, you could be forgiven for thinking the business of Ipswich City Council has ground to a halt.

Thankfully, that is not the case. To illustrate the point, Council is currently calling for expressions of interest from artists to create new public art installations at four locations across the city.

There’s a thing called the Public Art Initiative in which Ipswich received $810,000 from a pool of $10 million through the much larger $1.8 billion SEQ City Deal. This deal is an agreement between the Australian and Queensland governments and Council of Mayors.

It is a sweet but significant win for our city.

Large-scale sculptures can and do enhance streetscapes and parks. Council has flagged a budget in the range of $35,000 to $650,000 for each commission.

The four locations chosen for works are River Heart Parklands, d’Arcy Doyle Place, Bremervale Park Raceview and Tallegalla Cemetery.

Each location lends itself to a theme. For example, the piece for River Heart Parklands might reflect on the impact of flooding and the effects a natural disaster has on the city and its residents.

For Ipswich artists, this really is a fantastic opportunity.

Check out the details on shapeyouripswich.com.au. Expressions of interest close on March 10.
