REIGNING Ipswich premiership jockey Angela Jones has surged ahead of her rivals just three months into the 2025-26 season, breaking away from the chasing pack with a strong and consistent run of form.
The 24-year-old sits atop the standings with seven wins, seven seconds and six thirds, adding to her tally last week aboard Hidden Future.
The Jimmy Downes-trained filly, a three-year-old daughter of Impending based at Beaudesert, stepped out for her second career start after a runner- up effort earlier this month. Under Jones, she enjoyed a dream run from barrier two and powered home to win by just under a length, signalling there’s plenty more to come.
Hot on Jones’s heels is former Victorian rider Ryan Maloney, who remains firmly in contention with seven wins, three seconds and five thirds after pulling off a double at Bundamba last week.
Maloney struck early in race two when Global broke through at his fifth appearance, scoring by 0.81 lengths paying $9. He backed it up in race four, lifting Making News ($6) to a narrow victory for the Gollan stable.
The North Pacific x Janast filly was already on the rise after breaking her maiden at Eagle Farm in October and firmed slightly before delivering the tight win.
A former Brisbane premiership-winning jockey (2020-21), Maloney continues to demonstrate his class. He has ridden 34 metropolitan winners this season at a superb 27.9 per cent strike rate, well clear of nearest rival Ben Thompson on 25 wins (14.7 per cent).
Meanwhile, reigning Ipswich premiership trainer Tony Gollan remains the benchmark, chasing yet another title after securing nine of the past 11 local trainers’ premierships.
Racing returns to the Bundamba track today with a competitive seven- race card.
