IPSWICH shopping centres are on the hunt for jolly men in red, with organisers warning the Christmas rush is set to be busier than ever.
JAM Promotions & Events director Margie Lawrence said more Santas were needed at Booval and Redbank Plaza, with the chance to spread Christmas cheer while pocketing $30 an hour upwards plus penalty rates.
“It’s not a shortage as such – Santa photos are just becoming more and more popular every year,” Ms Lawrence said.
“With extended shopping hours, you can’t expect someone to sit in a hot suit for eight hours straight.
“That’s why we’re looking for more Santas to do shorter shifts.”
And while a big belly and a real beard are a bonus, Ms Lawrence says padding, wigs and whiskers are all provided.
“Real-bearded Santas are in high demand, but you definitely don’t need one to do the job,” she said.
So, what makes the perfect Santa?
“Someone who just loves Christmas and loves people,” she said.
“It’s about spreading joy to the kids and the parents too.
“You’ve got to enjoy being out there making people smile.”
The role is also proving a big hit with retired men looking for some festive pocket money.
“Many of our Santas are pensioners who come back year after year – they use the money to go on a cruise after Christmas,” Ms Lawrence laughed.
As for the kids’ wish lists? Gone are the days of dolls and toy cars.
“These days it’s puppies, computers, electric bikes… very expensive things! Santa never promises anything of course, but he always listens carefully,” she said.
And it’s not just Santas in demand – Mrs Claus has become a star attraction in her own right, appearing at many shopping centres for storytime, cookie-making and photos.
“I call it ‘bring your wife to work day’,” Ms Lawrence joked.
Anyone interested in donning the red suit will need a police check and must complete special training – including learning the top toy trends – to make sure the magic of Christmas stays alive.
