TWO new special schools set to open across the Ipswich region next year have officially been named, marking another major step towards welcoming their first students in 2027.
Leichhardt Special School in Ipswich West and Woogaroo Creek Special School in the Springfield-Redbank area are among the first five of 22 new Queensland schools to have their names confirmed.
Both schools are scheduled to open for Term 1, 2027, expanding access to specialist education as the Ipswich region continues to experience significant population growth.
Enrolments are now open, with foundation principals working alongside families and their local communities to establish the new schools ahead of opening day.
Foundation Principal of Leichhardt Special School Renae Somerville said she was proud to have the opportunity to help establish the school.
“As Foundation Principal, I look forward to opening Leichhardt Special School in 2027 and building a strong, inclusive school where every student is supported to thrive,” Ms Somerville said.
Woogaroo Creek Special School Foundation Principal Rachel Dougherty said she felt privileged to be working with the new school community.
“We are working together to build an inclusive, innovative school that involves and meets the needs of students, families, staff and the broader community,” Ms Dougherty said.
The other three schools named are Ridgeview Special School and Corymbia Reserve State High School at Logan Reserve, and Berrinba Special School at Logan Central.
The names were chosen following consultation with local schools, community members, Members of Parliament, local government representatives and other stakeholders.
School logos, uniforms and colours are also being finalised.
The five schools are part of the State Government’s program to deliver 22 new schools across Queensland, including nine special schools, under its $23.1 billion education budget.
