IPSWICH’S status as a home of karting is set to continue, with a new deal for Ipswich City Dirt Kart Club to remain at Willowbank among three proposed sporting facilities leasing partnerships with council across the city.

Ipswich City Council Finance and Governance Committee Chair Paul Tully said Council had also endorsed recommendations for renewal of leases for the continuation of swimming at Goodna Aquatic Centre and tennis at Springfield Central.

“Karting is one of Ipswich’s best loved sports, with the Ipswich City Dirt Kart Club going strong at Ipswich Motorsport Precinct in Willowbank since 1998,” Cr Tully said.

“The club is one of the biggest in South East Queensland and provides an avenue for our up-and-coming motorsport stars to hone their skills, nurturing racers as young as five.”

The recommendation of a new lease, endorsed by Council, means the club is set to remain at the Council-owned track at 102 Champions Way for another five years.

“I’m also delighted Council has endorsed a recommendation for a renewal of lease for Australian Crawl to continue to provide their swimming lessons at Goodna Aquatic Centre,” Cr Tully said. “This is set to ensure Ipswich children can continue to learn to be safe in and around water, giving them the tools they need to become stronger swimmers, while aqua fitness classes will continue for older generations.”

Cr Tully said Baseline Tennis Coaching would continue operations at the Springfield Central Sports Complex courts.

“The next Ash Barty may well be unearthed at Springfield Central Sports Complex, with the staff at Baseline Tennis Coaching set to continue sharing their expertise to our future stars,” he said.

“Ipswich’s strong sports landscape is one of the many reasons it’s a great place to live.

“It’s fantastic Council can continue these partnerships with sporting organisations, with all the health, social, cultural and economic benefits that they bring for the community.”
