FOR more than 50 years, the Ipswich Stamp Club has been a hub for collectors of all ages, offering a place where history, hobby, and community come together.
Founded in 1973 after a meeting convened by David Walker, the club has grown from a small gathering of enthusiasts into a vibrant community that meets at the Showplace Reception Centre at the Ipswich Showgrounds.
“Stamp collecting is more than just putting stamps in an album,” Ipswich Stamp Club President Bill Hewson said.
“It’s about discovering stories, exploring history, and connecting with people who share the same passion.”
What makes stamp collecting unique, says Mr Hewson, is its versatility.
“Some collectors enjoy the simplicity of gathering stamps from their own country, while others study the intricate details of pre-World War II prints and the tiny flaws that make each stamp unique,” he said
“No one tells you what to collect – you choose what interests you.”
The global nature of stamps ensures that collections can grow indefinitely.
“There are so many stamps issued worldwide, you can always find something new to add to your collection,” Mr Hewson said.
“Collectors may focus on themes like the Olympics, historical events, or countries they’ve visited, making each collection highly personal.”
Stamp collecting has evolved over the years and while many physical shops have closed, online dealers now make it easier than ever to find rare or unusual stamps.
Some postal authorities have even introduced digital stamps, opening up exciting new possibilities.
“Even with all these changes, the core of stamp collecting hasn’t changed,” Mr Hewson said.
“It’s still about the thrill of discovery, the joy of sharing stories, and the friendships that grow from a shared passion.”
The Ipswich Stamp Club prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere, with Mr Hewson noting that the club currently has slightly more female members than male, and newcomers are warmly received.
“Our members are friendly and always happy to sit down with visitors, answer questions, and show them what we do,” he said.
