THIRTEEN new purpose- built homes with on-site support services will be delivered in Ipswich to help young mothers and their children who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The homes form part of a $30 million Queensland Government initiative aimed at providing safe, stable housing with “wraparound” supports for vulnerable young families, particularly during pregnancy and early motherhood.
The Ipswich project will be delivered by the Lady Musgrave Trust and will consist of 13 self-contained homes designed to support young mothers to maintain secure tenancies, build independence and stay connected to education, training and community services.
Lady Musgrave Trust CEO Victoria Parker said the Ipswich homes would be life-changing for young women and their children.
“These 13 new homes will provide young mums with the safety and stability they need to build a secure future for their families,” Ms Parker said.
“Having long-term housing combined with wraparound supports gives young mothers the opportunity to rebuild confidence, continue education and create lasting stability for themselves and their children.”
Housing Minister Sam O’Connor said the Ipswich development reflects a shift towards early-intervention housing models that combine accommodation with specialist support.
“Every young mum deserves a safe home and the chance to give her children the best possible start in life,” Mr O’Connor said.
“By delivering specially designed homes with on-site supports in Ipswich, we’re giving vulnerable young families the stability they need today and a pathway to a better future.”
The homes will offer more than just accommodation, with on-site support services helping residents navigate parenting, health care, education and pathways into long-term housing.
The Ipswich development is part of a broader state program that will also deliver supported housing for young mothers in Brisbane, Townsville and Mackay, targeting regions with high levels of housing stress and homelessness risk.
The Government says the initiative is focused on preventing homelessness before families reach crisis point, ensuring young mothers and babies can access safe housing.
Construction timeframes for the Ipswich homes are expected to be confirmed following final site planning and approvals.
