THE future of the historic Ipswich Trades Hall has been secured following a $100,000 grant from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, allowing urgent roof repairs to move ahead.
The funding follows a major community fundraiser last July, which raised more than $135,000 and demonstrated strong local support for the landmark building.
For several years, the deteriorating roof placed significant financial strain on the Trades Hall, a situation that worsened after damage caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025.
The building’s fortunes began to turn when a new committee, led by president Elliot D’Arcy, took over during a challenging period marked by mounting repair costs and difficulties retaining tenants.
State Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard said the grant recognises the Trades Hall’s long-standing importance to the local community.
“The Ipswich Trades Hall is an institution with deep roots in our city’s history,” Ms Howard said.
“When the new committee stepped in, they inherited a building in urgent need of repair and finances under real strain.
“This $100,000 grant, alongside the remarkable $135,000 raised by the community, ensures this iconic building can be restored and continue serving Ipswich for generations to come.”
Ms Howard also acknowledged the support of affiliated unions and local leaders who backed the July fundraiser, including Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding, councillor Pye Augustine, and State Member for Bundamba Lance McCallum.
One of the key beneficiaries of the roof replacement is Ipswich Community Youth Service, a long-term tenant that remained at the Hall despite the building’s condition. With repairs now underway, the organisation is set to expand its services.
Mr D’Arcy said the funding marks a critical turning point.
“When our committee took over, the roof was failing and it made it incredibly difficult to secure and retain tenants,” he said.
“Thanks to this grant, the generosity of our unions and the support shown by the community, work is now underway to fully replace the roof and secure the future of this building.”
Roof replacement works are expected to be completed in the coming months.
