RENOWNED director Timothy Wynn is stepping out of his self-imposed sabbatical to take the helm of Swich Up Productions’ latest offering Jekyll and Hyde – The Musical.

In 2022, Wynn’s directorial work on Seawall and Tick, Tick … Boom! earned him six Matilda award nominations, solidifying his reputation as one of the most innovative directors in the local scene.

In 2024, his work with THAT Production Company, where he has served as artistic director since 2009, brought more accolades.

His direction of Every Brilliant Thing earned the Brisbane Powerhouse Best Independent Production Award, while lead actor Jason Klarwein received the Best Performance in a Leading Role: Independent Production award.

Following the conclusion of the Ipswich production of Every Brilliant Thing, Wynn told Local Ipswich News that a break was needed.

“I did take a bit of a six-month break, but it was mostly a sabbatical from producing which is a relentless slog,” he said.

However, the allure of Swich Up Productions’ ambitious new project drew him back to the director’s chair.

“I think it’s always exciting to flex one’s directorial muscles with a big musical like Jekyll and Hyde,” he said.

“It’s mostly sing-through and has an orchestra and a cast of over 30 people – it’s a great fun challenge.

“Plus, the story is one that’s relevant to today as we seek to balance our own humanity with technological advancement.

“The cast are a mix of impressive local talent and some of South East Queensland’s finest and we are lucky to have them in this show.”

Swich Up Productions co-founder Adrian Carr said the company was thrilled when Wynn agreed to direct.

“Having someone of Tim’s calibre was a real coup for us, and the connection was natural since (co-founder) Simone had taught him drama during his school years. He jumped at the opportunity immediately,” Carr said.

“Tim brings an incredible depth as a director. He’s renowned for his work with actors, bringing out nuanced performances through his thoughtful script analysis and unique creative vision.

“The cast is simply extraordinary. After highly competitive auditions, we secured some tremendous talent for our lead roles.

“This show will demonstrate the exceptional quality of theatre SUP are capable of producing, and I believe audiences will be absolutely blown away.”

Following its successful 2024 season, Swich Up Productions is aiming even higher with its production of Jekyll and Hyde – The Musical.

This dark and gripping adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story delves into themes of passion, obsession, and the duality of human nature.

The musical will showcase some of theatre’s most iconic songs, including This is the Moment, Someone Like You, and In His Eyes.

Jekyll and Hyde – The Musical will run from March 7 to March 9 at the Ipswich Civic Centre.

Tickets are now on sale for one of the events of the year for the Ipswich arts community.
