The journey from the garden to the kitchen

I’m no cook to speak of, but came across this interesting site that suggested ways of doing things different in the kitchen. We always talk about gardening with less effort, so a natural progression is to the kitchen where all our meals are prepared.

We purchase our strawberries from the supermarket, wash them when we get home, put them in a bowl and offer them to our guests. They in turn pick them up, take a few smallbites and leave the remainder of the strawberry behind.

But what if we were to core the strawberry first. Using a strong straw, poke it right through the middle of the fruit, cutting out the end and the middle making the whole strawberry available in a mouthful, much easier eating for deserts.

Boiling eggs in an air fryer sounds, not quite right, but they can be done that way if you want. Just put the quantity you wish to boil, let them roll around at 180 degrees for about 9 minutes , depending on how hard you want them, take them out and put in a bowl of iced water, to cool and then peel. You may have to experiment a few times to get them the way you like them. No fussing with boiling water whilst timing is left to the air fryer.

Have you ever had herbs go off in the fridge.

One sure way to keep them longer is to chop them up and with a little water and olive oil, place in the large ice cube containers, you know the rubbery ones that you can easily get the frozen contents out, and store in the freezer till you want them. They’ll last that little bit longer.

Peeling fruit is much easier if you place them in the air fryer for about 20 seconds The peel will become much easier to slide off.

Evidently, if you put your glad wrap in the fridge, the wrap will stretch much better and more evenly once you use it again.

So you don’t like the seeds in cherries, too much trouble to pit them. To make it easier, just place the cherry on top of a beer bottle, get a chopstick and squeeze the seed out of the fruit into the empty bottle.

Ever tried getting your timber cutting boards clean, if you don’t do it properly each time there is a gradual build up and this can be rather unhealthy for you. To clean your cutting board, simply cut a lemon in half and dip in course salt. Then, scrub your board with it and rinse everything with water.

Water and vinegar can be used in so many different ways, one more way is to mix the two together, spray on the surface of stainless steel, they can get quite dull after a while, this rejuvenates the surface making it sparkly and like new again.

Notice how your brown sugar goes all lumpy and sometimes gets very hard to use. By placing an orange peel inside the bag of sugar and then in an airtight container, your sugar should stay soft for a long while.

Poaching eggs is easy, isn’t it, do you hesitate to crack the egg over a frying pan, is it going to make a mess everywhere.

Then don’t do it. Using a little force drop it in the pan and pick the shell straight out, (they normally stick together), add a little water and put on the burner and slowly you’ll see the egg becoming perfectly ready right in front of your eyes.
