OUR city has a long and proud association with railways, with the first railway line in Queensland being Ipswich to Bigges Camp (Grandchester) in 1865.

Last week a classic old steam train ran from the Railway Museum out to Grandchester and back. Sadly, it didn’t have any public passengers on board.

I’d love to see regular train rides out to Grandchester, open to the public, and believe there would be an appetite for a regular event, and it would be a well-supported tourist attraction.

The Rosewood Hotel is back open with Luke and Lynette.

Rosewood pub

Pubs have struggled in the last few years and many have shut up and ceased trading.

It’s good to see Luke and Lynette trying to buck the trend.

They’ve recently bought the derelict historic Rosewood Hotel and are restoring it to its former glory. They have opened the bar and are serving drinks for the first time in 10 years.

They have big plans for the pub and are hoping to have a full kitchen up and running to serve meals by the end of July.

Charity couple

Bill and Dee O’Brien celebrated 50 years of marriage last week. The couple have three daughters and seven grandkids.

They recently retired to the Springs Lifestyle Village in Silkstone, after spending most of their married life at Karalee.Bill and Dee have been great supporters of the Cancer Council of Queensland, raising thousands of dollars through running morning teas.

Happy anniversary and I trust you have many more to come.

Indoor cricket star

Mitchell Harte was awarded the player of the tournament at last week’s National Indoor Cricket Titles at the Ipswich Indoor Sports Centre.

The U16 star was then selected for the Australian U16 team to go to the junior World Cup in Dubai in September.

Congratulations Mitch, and all the best in your upcoming tournament.

Golf Day

Family of league does a great job helping those former players doing it tough.

Last Friday the Ipswich Branch held a golf day at the Ipswich Golf Club.

Former NRL greats in John Lomax, Kerry Boustead and Russell Gartner joined former golf pro Peter Senior for the occasion.
