BRISBANE’s top-two aspirations hit a bump in the road after the Geelong Cats delivered an upset 10-point win on the defending premiers on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions kicked some late goals to close the deficit, but it was not enough with the Cats taking the 47-37 victory at GMHBA Stadium.

Out of the gates, the Cats got the perfect start in front of their home faithful, becoming the first team to kick three first-quarter goals against the Lions this year.

Lions’ star Dakota Davidson kicked one goal in the first half before being ruled out in the second half.
Without Davidson, Brisbane looked weak and lost in attack, struggling to generate genuine opportunities in its forward 50.

Geelong did not look like a team currently sitting at 12th on the ladder, but they held together to go on with the win.

In the loss, teenager Charlie Mullins’ continued to show her immense ability contributing 18 disposals, one goal, as she covered 256 metres gained.

Making her return from a shoulder injury, Orla O’Dwyer kicked two goals for the Lions with 14 disposals.

The loss played déjà vu back to that of last year when the Lions were handed a 21-point loss by St Kilda in round nine.

The Lions would go on to take the AFLW 2024 Premiership, setting this week’s game against the 15th placed Sydney Swans up as the perfect chance for the Lions to move into the top-two before their final game of the regular season.

The Lions head south to play St Kilda Saints at RSEA Park in Melbourne on November 3, in their final game of the regular season.

The game against the Sydney Swans will see the Lions return to Brighton Homes Arena in front of their roar-some home fans with kick off at 4.05PM this Sunday afternoon.
