PREMIER David Crisafulli has set two sitting weeks of the Queensland Parliament to introduce his government’s Making Queensland Safer Laws.

The legislation, a pillar of his campaign for the top job, will be introduced to Parliament this month and be passed by Parliament in December.

Local Ipswich News contacted the local Ipswich MPs, all members of the Labor Opposition, for their comments on the proposed legislation.

Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard said the Opposition was waiting for the draft law to be released by Mr Crisafulli before it would then be considered by the Shadow Cabinet and Labor Caucus.

Member for Ipswich West Wendy Bourne said that until the draft was received, the Opposition’s thoughts on the government’s anti-crime stance would remain the same.

“Until that is received, David Crisafulli’s community safety plan remains a four-word slogan,” Ms Bourne said.

Mr Crisafulli said restoring safety to Queensland was the government’s No.1 priority.

“I promised we would get straight to work and that’s what we are going to do to deliver these tougher laws before the end of the year,” he said.

“We’ve always been upfront the priority is to pass these laws by Christmas and we’ve been speaking with Queenslanders about Adult Crime, Adult Time for months.

“Queenslanders have been clear this is what they want, now we’ll act on this and deliver as promised.

“The Making Queensland Safer Laws will be the first piece of legislation introduced by our government, and those laws will be passed by Christmas.

“We will bring Adult Crime, Adult Time into law, remove detention as a last resort for young offenders and put the rights of victims first, just as we promised to do.

“Our tougher laws will complement our plans for gold standard early intervention and crime prevention to ensure there are fewer victims under an LNP Government.”

Crime statistics as per Queensland Police Data regarding crimes throughout the Ipswich region were the lowest in the past nine years, a total 23,740 report crimes compared to 30,994 last year.
