NAIDOC Week will be celebrated with a vibrant community event at Tulmur Place next Tuesday, bringing people together to honour culture, connection, and the leaders of tomorrow.

The day will feature music, dance, cultural performances, and activities for all ages, all centred around this year’s theme: The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy.

Mayor Teresa Harding said this year’s theme encouraged the community to look ahead and reflect on the crucial role young people will play in shaping the future.

“NAIDOC Week is a fantastic opportunity to think about the future as we continue to work at forging a path towards reconciliation,” she said.

“The people of Ipswich are proud of the Indigenous history of these lands and waters – traditionally known as Tulmur – which have been home to the Jagera, Yuggera and Ugarapul Peoples of the Yugara Language Group for millennia.”

Mayor Harding praised the contribution of local First Nations leaders and emphasised the importance of empowering youth to carry on this legacy.

“It’s wonderful that this year’s NAIDOC Week theme shines a light on the young people who will become the leaders of the future, proudly building on thousands of generations before them,” she said.

Since 1999, Ipswich City Council’s Indigenous Accord has guided its actions in working alongside First Nations communities, reaffirming a longstanding commitment to reconciliation.

Community and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Jacob Madsen said the NAIDOC event offered residents a chance to come together in a spirit of celebration and learning.

“For years, our NAIDOC event has brought the community together to celebrate the culture and achievements of Indigenous Australians and show our support for positive outcomes into the future,” Cr Madsen said. “Events like this reflect Ipswich’s vibrant, community-minded spirit, with residents committed to walking together in respect, unity and shared purpose.”
