The local manufacturing industry has flexed its muscles with a Redbank-based company set to produce Australia’s biggest defence export.

Rheinmetall Defence Australia received the tender to assemble more than 100 Heavy Weapon Carrier vehicles, following a contract being signed between Germany and Australia.

The Ipswich-made armoured transport vehicle will be based on the Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle, in a deal that Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said would further secure Ipswich’s manufacturing credentials with delivery scheduled to begin in 2025.

“This $1 billion deal means job security with 600 long-term and new jobs for Ipswich residents,” Mayor Harding said.

“I would like to congratulate Rheinmetall Defence Australia, along with the Australian Government, for securing this deal and bringing this incredible opportunity to Ipswich’s manufacturing industry.

“This agreement will boost our local economy and further cement Ipswich as a defence manufacturing leader.”

Managing Director of Rheinmetall Defence Australia Nathan Poyner said they welcomed the close defence industry partnership between Australia and Germany as the two nations work together to enhance global security.

“Rheinmetall has more than 900 employees in Australia, high-tech capabilities and an established manufacturing facility in Redbank that produces vehicles, armour and electronics,” Mr Poyner said.

Mayor Harding acknowledged Rheinmetall is the largest supplier of military vehicles to Australia’s armed forces.

“As Queensland’s fastest growing city, we need to ensure we are providing sustainable economic growth, building an economy of the future and providing high value jobs to keep pace with our growth.”
