FAMILIES and community members are raising concerns over the lack of safe pedestrian access to the Redbank Plains Scout Den on Jones Rd.
Local parents say children attending Bush Kindy or other events at the Scout Den are forced to cross the busy road twice a day, with no pedestrian crossing and no footpath linking the nearby traffic lights to the facility.
“It’s terrifying having to cross with a group of young kids every day,” one parent said.
“Cars often speed past, and there’s nowhere safe for the children to walk. We shouldn’t have to be taking these risks just to get to an activity that’s supposed to be fun and educational.”
A recent request to Ipswich City Council for a zebra crossing was declined, with the council citing “insufficient demonstrated pedestrian demand” and the absence of a northern-side footpath.
But parents and local groups say they are determined to keep pushing.
“Council decisions can change if the community speaks up,” one parent said. “We need as many voices as possible to show this isn’t just one parent’s worry – it’s a real safety issue for everyone.”
Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said Council was currently undertaking a corridor plan for Jones Rd, Bellbird Park.
“As part of the broader review of the road corridor, it will consider potential improvements for all road users – including pedestrians and cyclists,” he said.
“Council’s assessment of this area found the current pedestrian activity did not necessarily align with the criteria for installing a pedestrian crossing now.
“Pedestrian demand at this location was limited to specific times and activities, and based on all known factors, a pedestrian crossing at this stage is not justified.”
Deputy Mayor and Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic added that any new crossing must meet strict safety requirements.
“When Council considers pedestrian crossings, the location must demonstrate regular, ongoing use by a wide range of community members,” she said.
“A pedestrian crossing here would also need to address safety considerations, including traffic speed, visibility, vehicle access into and out of the Redbank Plains Scout Den, and adjoining footpath requirements.”
A petition has also been launched to demonstrate the level of concern.
“Every signature counts,” said one local grandmother. “We need to show that this is about protecting children and the wider community.”
