IT took my wife and I more than six years for our minds to accept the inevitable idea of living in a resort village.
We constantly put off the idea watching on while some of our friends made the decision to down size and move away from homes they had lived in for many years.
You can choose a resort style village where you are near a few hundred people around your age or you can decide on a retirement village where meals can be catered for and rooms are smaller.
There are many different types of places that can accommodate your mind set, from paying rent on the house you own to paying via a different method with your finances being the ultimate decider.
There are organisations who can assist in the decision making, with Centrelink is a valuable tool in considering the money side of things.
Legal advice should be entered into if you have a complicated financial or family situation to deal with.
If you have difficulty in the decision making, then your family should be involved and can often help you with a way out of your dilemma.
In a sense it will be their future as well that’s tied up in the final outcome.
There are many ways one can go about this change, however it would be a wise body that works it all out before they get too old or frail to move successfully.
It may be that the yard is getting too much for you to manage, maybe a smaller area would suit your physical requirements, or maybe you have a large house that is too much to look after, too many rooms to keep clean, a bad back or other ailment that stops you enjoying these activities.
Any of these conditions means a hard look at your life and a decision before it’s too late to move.
Before we moved in, the thought remained that these were old people (seniors), forgetting that we were one of them, not wanting to admit our age.
One of the first functions we attended at a social club gathering had a ‘sing-a-long’ segment where everyone sang the songs, I had to laugh, here I was sitting here in this hall, with all the oldies, singing songs, just like I’d seen on segments of TV in old age homes and I was now one of them!
