FORMER Toronto Wolfpack playmaker and Ipswich Jets halfback Rhys Jacks is preparing to guide Canada’s under-19s into uncharted territory as head coach, with the squad set to contest the nation’s first-ever U19 Rugby League Test Match.
“We are playing in Canada’s first ever U19 Rugby League Test Match,” Jacks said.
“The game will be in Jamaica against Jamaica.”
Jacks was announced as head coach of the newly formed side last year, a major step in Canada Rugby League’s push to strengthen its development pathways – and a personal milestone for the long-time international.
“The opportunity to coach Canada is a massive privilege for myself as I love giving back to Canadian rugby league,” he said.
“They have given me so many proud moments over the past decade. Wearing the Canada badge means a lot to represent my grandfather and I’m sure he would be looking down very proud.”
Brisbane-born but eligible through family heritage, Jacks debuted for Canada in 2015 and went on to collect four caps.
His playing career has spanned both hemispheres: a stint with Sheffield Eagles in 2016, followed by a key role in Toronto Wolfpack’s inaugural League 1 campaign where he scored six tries in 21 games and helped secure promotion to the Championship.
Back in Australia, Jacks has amassed more than 150 Hostplus Cup appearances, having first debuted with the Jets in 2010.
Now, seven years later, he returns to the national program in a leadership capacity, tasked with shaping the next wave of young Canadian talent. His appointment brings invaluable experience and credibility as Canada works to rebuild and widen its junior player base.
Jacks has been impressed by the squad’s rapid development.
“I can’t wait to see them pull on that Canada jersey,” he said.
