AFTER more than six years of silence, the Rosewood Railway is preparing to steam back to life, reconnecting the historic stations of Kunkala and Cabanda.
Tucked away at Kunkala in Ashwell, the rail yard might be hidden – but the dreams being put on track are bold and bright.
This revival is more than just track and timber – it’s a celebration of Queensland’s proud rail heritage, brought back to life by the hands and hearts of passionate volunteers and a community that deeply values its history.
Australian Railway Historical Society Queensland Division President Steve Lamprecht said getting this historical railway back on track was important to Rosewood and surrounding communities.
“Reviving this piece of Queensland’s rail heritage is no small task,” he said.
“There’s a significant amount of restoration and maintenance required on both the track and our rollingstock.
“To make this dream a reality, we’re reaching out for strong community and corporate support.
“We envision the railway not just as a rolling museum, but as a tourism destination that sparks pride in Rosewood, boosts local business, and keeps history alive for the next generation.”
Local train collector and long-time supporter of Queensland rail history Mike Laley said the revival was important for generations to come.
“These trains and stations aren’t just relics – they’re storytellers,” he said.
“Every carriage, every piece of track has a tale to tell. Seeing the Rosewood Railway come back to life is like watching history breathe again. It’s something our kids and grandkids deserve to experience.”
Operating since 1911, the former Marburg branch line once connected rural communities across the scenic Bremer Valley.
With your help the Rosewood Railway can be brought back to life.
