WE are down to the final four in the Rugby League World Cup, and if the remaining three matches are anything like last Sunday’s blockbuster between Tonga and Samoa, we are in for an absolute treat.
In a game that had everything, Tonga eventually prevailed 20-18 in a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire. The victory for Tonga now sets up a mouth- watering semi-final against New Zealand on Saturday, while Samoa now face the enormous challenge of taking on Australia on Sunday.
AUSTRALIA v SAMOA
The Kangaroos will enter this clash as clear favourites, but they certainly won’t be taking Samoa lightly.
The two nations have a history of big encounters, including the 2022 World Cup Final, and Samoa will be determined to cause an upset.
Australia will need to lift another gear if they are to progress to the final, while for Samoa, they must complete at a high rate and force the pressure onto the Aussies.
NEW ZEALAND v TONGA
This also shapes as a beauty. The Kiwis have shown plenty of attacking firepower throughout the tournament, but Tonga have demonstrated they have the size, skill and determination to match anyone.
After their courageous victory over Samoa, confidence will be sky-high in the Tongan camp.
This clash is going to be physical and the hits are going to be enormous. Both teams must keep their emotions in check if they are to progress onto the final.
The women’s side of the World Cup is also down to the final four, with Australia set to battle Fiji while New Zealand face Samoa in what promises to be two exciting semi-finals.
The Jillaroos have been simply outstanding in their unbeaten run and remain the team to beat.
Fiji will be a dangerous opponent after an impressive tournament, but Australia will start very strong favourites.
The other semi-final sees New Zealand take on Samoa, with both nations showing they have what it takes to win a tight contest.
My selections:
Australia will be too professional for a gallant Samoa while New Zealand will just edge out Tonga in a huge battle.
On the women’s side of the draw I see Australia dominating Fiji and New Zealand winning a thriller against Samoa.
