SHERLOCK & Daughter premieres on Thursday, May 8 on SBS and SBS On Demand, with episodes airing weekly on SBS starting at 9.30pm.
One of the most oft-recognised characters in literature is Sherlock Holmes. Aside from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories, there have been countless adaptions in TV and film, including several over the past two decades.
There was the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie (and its sequel) starring Robert Downey Jr in the title role, with Jude Law as his sidekick, Dr Watson.
On the small screen, there were four seasons of the 2010 BBC series Sherlock starring a then mostly-unknown Benedict Cumberbatch set in current day, with “Hot Priest” Andrew Scott as Sherlock’s nemesis, James Moriarty.
Netflix’s Enola Holmes saw Millie Bobbie Brown as the younger sister of the famed sleuth (Henry Cavill) solve her own mysteries. Two television series, Elementary and Watson, the latter currently on air, are set in the modern day.
Now we have, Sherlock and Daughter, a mystery television series created by Brendan Foley, with showrunner James Duff based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
The narrative follows Sherlock Holmes as he becomes embroiled in a malevolent conspiracy involving his archenemy Professor Moriarty, and ends up joining forces with Amelia Rojas, a young native American woman whose mother was recently murdered. As they work together to crack the case, Amelia also sets out to prove that the great detective is her long-lost father.
Episode one begins when Sherlock Holmes finds himself in a most unusual state: extortion. He is stymied, unable to investigate a recent spate of high-profile kidnappings lest he incur the wrath of a mysterious criminal syndicate who have taken hostage his dearest friends, Doctor Watson and Mrs Hudson.
Meanwhile, a young American woman named Amelia Rojas travels across the world after a murder in her home in California, intent on meeting the famed detective. When this strange young woman shows up on his doorstep, Sherlock must determine whether she is a threat or an asset.
