SOPHIA College in Plainland has unveiled a series of state-of-the-art facilities as part of its Stage 3 construction, underscoring its commitment to fostering holistic education and community engagement.

The recent expansion includes a multi-purpose tiered science room as well as an additional laboratory to complement the College’s three labs built in 2023. Together, these spaces allow students to experience a diverse range of learning approaches.

A large six-room innovation hub, purposefully created to open into one large space or to be used as six individual classrooms, has been designed to inspire innovation, creativity and collaboration in design, aerospace, digital technology, furnishings, and engineering.

In addition to the traditional tools that provide the basis for becoming a master tradesman, the College has invested in the future of students by equipping this new space with items that will allow for rapidly prototype creative solutions to current and emerging challenges for communities across the globe using future-focussed manufacturing tools including computer-controlled cutters and 3D printers.

The College’s new Learning Common is a prominent building on campus.

This facility provides spaces for students to connect with wellbeing support as well as having access to contemporary conferencing technology.

At the completion of Stage 2 construction, Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz emphasised the significance of these developments.

“Students and teachers thrive when their schools have modern and up-to-date facilities,” he said.

Mr Buchholz further highlighted that such investments ensured every student received a high-quality education, irrespective of their school’s location.

Principal Narelle Dobson acknowledged that such work enabled the creation of vibrant learning spaces catering to the College’s growing population.

She emphasised the College’s dedication to engaging students in ecology, science, and technology through these new facilities.

Established with a vision rooted in Franciscan philosophies, Sophia College aims to cultivate a community that lives in kinship with nature, each other and God.

The foundation of the College is built upon “Laudato Si”, reflecting a commitment to integral ecology and honouring the interconnectedness of all creation.

The College’s curriculum is designed to cater to diverse student aspirations. In Years 9 and 10, students engage in core subjects such as English, mathematics, science, history, and health and physical education, alongside electives like agricultural futures, justice and enterprise, extension mathematics, extension English, extension science and engineering.

For senior students in Years 11 and 12, the College offers pathways leading to the Queensland Certificate of Education, with options to pursue an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or vocational certificates, ensuring alignment with individual goals and interests.

The recent infrastructure developments at Sophia College not only enhance the educational environment but also reflect the College’s dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals equipped to contribute to society.

As the College grows, these new facilities will stand as a testament to its commitment to excellence in education and community development.
