WITH participation in football continuing to surge across Greater Springfield, one local club is investing in a part of the game often overlooked but essential to every weekend fixture.
Springfield United Football Club has launched its Referee Academy Program for 2026, an initiative designed to recruit, develop and retain the next generation of grassroots match officials while helping address the growing shortage of referees across the sport.
Led by Referee Coordinator Shaun Kettlety, the academy provides aspiring referees with structured training, mentoring and practical match experience through a tiered development pathway.
With more than 1500 players at the club, Springfield United has identified referee development as a critical part of building a sustainable football program.
The academy sees participants progress through three development tiers, with each level introducing greater responsibility and more challenging match environments as referees build their confidence and skills.
Young officials receive mentoring from experienced referees, opportunities to officiate MiniRoos, junior and senior fixtures, and regular feedback to support their development both on and off the field.
Kettlety said the academy was about far more than ensuring every game had a referee.
“It’s about creating a safe, positive environment where young referees feel valued, supported and part of the football community,” he said.
“We are focused on developing strong, confident young leaders of the future – individuals who can make decisions under pressure, communicate effectively and contribute positively both on and off the field.”
The initiative complements Springfield United’s broader football development program, which includes its Football Queensland Academy status, enhanced coaching pathways and strengthened safeguarding framework.
Technical Director Michael Matthews said investing in referees ultimately benefited everyone involved in the game.
“By investing in referees, we’re investing in the quality of the game our kids experience every weekend, while also providing a valuable opportunity for young people at Springfield United to earn an income within a football environment.”
