IT has been a stellar year for Ipswich junior athletes this year with numerous high achievements in major competitions.

WestMac College excelled in both hockey and soccer while Ipswich State High’s rugby league side annexed every major title on offer.

Over at Ipswich Junior Grammar School (IJGS) students were also on the podium with three winning their way through to national finals in athletics and swimming.

School captain Archer Crowley contested four events at the Queensland Athletics Championships and won the silver medal in Long Jump.

Archer’s medal-winning performance saw him selected for the Queensland Athletics team for nationals there he narrowly missed a medal in the long jump finishing fourth.

He is now training to compete in the under 15 Heptathlon championships in December.

Archer also competed in 11 events at the North Queensland Athletics Championships in Townsville and dominated the meet coming away with eight gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

Teagan Hanlon, also in Year 6 at IJGS, performed strongly in several sports throughout 2022.

She won a bronze medal in the 11 Year’s Combined Event at the Queensland Athletics Championships and this qualified her for the nationals.

There she achieved a personal best in the 100m and the long jump.

Teagan is a true all-rounder contesting basketball, cricket, netball, swimming, aquathlon and athletics for her school.

Another Year 6 student in William Taione also had a successful year this time in the pool.

William competed at the National School Swimming Championships for 10 to 12-year-olds, the pinnacle of school representative swimming.

Representing Queensland in the 100m and 50m breaststroke events he swam a personal best in the 50m breaststroke and placed fourth in the final, missing bronze by a touch.

Head of Physical Education and Sport at Ipswich Junior Grammar School Mike Duce said the students should be proud of their accomplishments.

“Making any representative sporting team is a huge achievement, but to go on and make State and National teams is truly outstanding,” he said.
