LOCAL fighter Taylah Gentzen is chasing an early Christmas present – a win when she steps into the ring against Jess Adams at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on December 6.
With a professional record of 7-1, including three knockouts, the Ipswich City Boxing Club talent is training hard for what will be part of one of the biggest cards in the country.
“Absolutely pumped,” the 34-year-old said.
“Jai Opetaia, Justis Huni and Jason Maloney are headlining the event – it’s unreal to be backed by them again.”
Gentzen’s opponent Adams is a familiar face.
“I’ve known Jessica for a while – we were actually sparring partners back when I lived in Newcastle,” she said.
“She’s a tough chick and fit as anything. I’ve got a lot of respect for her; she takes on the best in Australia and never backs down. That’s why I’m so excited to share the ring and put on a show for everyone watching.”
Working under Ipswich City Boxing Club’s lead coach Jessica Cashman and local trainer Corey O’Connell, Gentzen said she had felt major growth over the past year.
“Jess’s dancing background and her ability to break down technique puts a unique spin on traditional boxing,” she said. “My timing, composure and ring IQ have all gone up a notch. I’m not stepping in there just to win; I’m stepping in to dominate.”
Now calling Ipswich home, the proud military member said the local support meant everything.
“Boxing isn’t just about how good you can fight – it’s about building an army of people who believe in you and want to come on the journey,” she said. “This isn’t just for me; it’s for all of us.”
Now ranked No.4 with the WBA, Gentzen is gearing up for Commonwealth Games trials in January, the next step towards her ultimate goal.
“The goal is clear – keep climbing until I’ve got that Commonwealth gold medal and world title wrapped around my waist,” she said.
“Every fight from here is a step closer.”
It’s been a year of highs and lows, but Gentzen says setbacks only fuel her.
Her motivation comes from her fiance, daughter, and boxing family.
“They keep me grounded. They remind me who I’m fighting for and why I started.”
