THE world renowned Tranz-Alpine rail journey is entering a new chapter, following the launch of a refurbished premium carriage designed to enhance one of New Zealand’s most celebrated scenic experiences.
Great Journeys New Zealand unveiled the upgrade at Christchurch’s Addington Station, calling it a major step forward for the iconic South Island route.
The TranzAlpine, which runs 223km between Christchurch and Greymouth, is widely regarded as one of the world’s great train journeys, traversing the Canterbury Plains, the Waimakariri Gorge and the Southern Alps in just under five hours. The service operates daily in summer and four days a week in winter.
KiwiRail Chief Customer and Growth Officer Adele Wilson said the new premium carriage represented a significant investment in passenger experience.
“The innovative carriage is the icing on the cake for this world-class rail experience,” Ms Wilson said.
“Its stylish interiors, comfortable seating configurations, and large panoramic windows enhance the experience of travelling through some of the world’s best scenery.”
The Scenic Plus service now features a dedicated kitchen carriage and a dining experience built around a paddock to plate philosophy.
“Nowhere else can you enjoy a fine dining experience with spectacular scenery that changes by the minute, and food and wine sourced from the very land you are travelling through,” Ms Wilson said.
The new carriage also introduces onboard wi-fi for the first time, with connectivity to be rolled out across the fleet over the coming year.
ChristchurchNZ GM Destination and Attraction Loren Aberhart praised the investment, saying it reflected a strong commitment to both visitors and local communities.
The TranzAlpine carried more than 130,000 passengers annually prior to the pandemic and continues to be a cornerstone of South Island tourism.
With the latest upgrades, operators say the journey is now better positioned than ever to showcase the landscapes and stories of Aotearoa.
