The rain was tumbling on the day I visited the Walloon Hotel – a gem that oozes country hospitality and serves up a delicious menu, only 20 minutes from the centre of Ipswich.
However, what greeted me in terms of service from barmaid Marie and her team, partnered with their food, would clear the skies and brighten up any day.
Walking through the doors, it is clear to see the popularity of the Walloon Hotel – the dining area is filled with faithful patrons and visitors, people just passing through.
The meal served up to me was the Wagyu Beef Cheek from the Chef Selection, and it only took one mouthful to decide my thoughts on the dish.
Tender and smooth like butter, the tender meat blends with the silky mash and you are hit hard with full flavour and saucy goodness.
Definitely one of the most delicious “pub meals” I’ve had in a long time, and easily the best in Ipswich at any pub I have had the pleasure of dining at.
Served up with creamy mash and broccolini, the port wine jus enhances the beef cheek and signs off on this tender favourite like a kiss from the country.
The serving size is generous, as are all the dishes served up at the Walloon Hotel, so you will never leave hungry.
The beer is cold, the T-bones and parmis are hot and delicious, and with live music regularly pumping, this is the place to be.
It’s not unusual for locals to arrive on horseback and tie up out the front, ready to sample a menu showcasing quality local produce.
Publican Stewart Gibson and his wife Katie moved from Cairns to take over the hotel, formerly known as the Walloon Saloon, for the family-owned Gibson Group.
Their philosophy is built on providing a welcoming, family-friendly and affordable dining experience.
“It’s so country,” Stewart says of the delightful town of Walloon.
“Yet you’re just eight minutes out of the city and 40 minutes from Brisbane.”
Walloon Hotel is located at 1 Queen St, Walloon and is open from 10am-2am daily.
