WITH the 2026 Ipswich Show just weeks away, work is officially underway on Stage 3 of a major redevelopment of the Ipswich Showgrounds, marking a significant step forward for one of the region’s most important community assets.
The latest phase of upgrades has been made possible through $6 million in federal funding, including a $4.5 million commitment secured in 2022 and a further $1.5 million announced in 2024 under the Protecting Our Communities (Disaster Resilience) Program.
Stage 3 focuses on modernising ageing infrastructure across the site, with improvements to amenities, electrical systems, lighting, perimeter fencing and the replacement of the cattle pavilion. Planning is also underway for the future replacement of the Ken Roberts Pavilion, ensuring the precinct continues to evolve to meet growing demand.
Construction has already begun on upgrades to existing facilities, with site preparations completed for new buildings set to commence following the Ipswich Show in May.
Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said the project delivers critical improvements for both everyday use and times of crisis.
He said the upgrades would strengthen flood resilience and enable the showgrounds to operate as a fully functional emergency relief centre, complete with essential amenities such as showers, toilets and private spaces for displaced residents during natural disasters.
With Ipswich continuing to experience rapid population growth, he added that the investment would not only improve community infrastructure but also support local jobs and economic activity.
Ipswich Show Society President Daren Zanow said the works represent years of planning, with the broader Showground Precinct Redevelopment strategy first established in 2012.
He said the upgraded facilities would enhance the Society’s ability to host major events while also providing critical support for families and animals during emergencies, reinforcing the site’s role as an evacuation centre.
The redevelopment is part of a long-term vision that includes a future Ipswich Convention and Exhibition Centre, positioning the precinct as a key regional hub for events, business and community use.
Stage 3 forms the final piece of a three-stage masterplan, following the design and proposed construction of the convention and exhibition centre. The current works are scheduled for completion by the end of 2026 and include a new laundry for caravanners, upgraded amenities, improved electrical capacity, enhanced lighting and a new multi-purpose building to house poultry and pigeon exhibits while also supporting local workshops and community activities.
Once complete, the upgrades will not only modernise the showgrounds but ensure it remains a resilient, flexible and future-ready space for the Ipswich community.
