HOLDING the hands of women on their birthing journey is a specialty of Ipswich Hospital midwife, Kym Lewis.

For almost 37 years, she has specialised in looking after bumps and babies and now holds the hands of children she helped deliver as they have too become parents.

Kym, who was herself born at Ipswich Hospital, said she loved the feeling of community and family when she spoke to the now-pregnant women she delivered decades earlier.

“I have listened to many life stories, held many hands, massaged, mopped brows, encouraged, supported, laughed, cried and been present for the joy and sometimes sadness of birth,” Kym said.“The most memorable and eventful was getting overalls off a patient in the front seat of her car in the hospital carpark, all while she was actively pushing.”

Plenty has changed throughout Kym’s career at Ipswich Hospital through the advancements in maternity and infant care. Ipswich Hospital midwives have now helped more than 250 women who opted for a water birth, which only began in January 2022.

“I love that I can refer to myself as a midwife. I feel grateful for my chosen career path and the team of professionals I have surrounding me every day,” Kym said.

Happy Mother’s Day to Kym and to all midwives.
