PLANNING is underway for an additional Ipswich City Council resource recovery centre and replacement animal management facility to bring better service and improved benefits to Ipswich’s fastest growing suburbs.
A report set to go before the Growth Infrastructure and Waste Committee today (Thursday) recommends that Council endorse a site at Redbank Plains as the preferred location for the facility.
With more than 70 percent of Ipswich’s growth was occurring in the corridor between Springfield and Ipswich Central and this centre would play a critical role in expanding resource recovery services for this rapidly growing area.
In the 2021-2022 financial year, Ipswich Waste Services managed nearly 160,000 tonnes of waste and recyclable materials, with 140,000 tonnes originating from households and 20,000 tonnes from commercial collections.
The city’s resource recovery infrastructure has not been expanded in more than 25 years. Both the Riverview and Rosewood centres are currently operating over capacity.
The proposed Southern Resource Recovery Centre will facilitate the recovery, sorting and transfer of recyclable materials from household waste.
The site was chosen for consideration as it is close enough to residents to offer convenience but far enough away from homes to minimise any impacts.
The closest households are 1.6 kilometres away.
Council also plans to use this land as a new location to replace the existing Ipswich Pound and Animal Management Facility located at West Ipswich.
If the proposed site at 831 Redbank Plains Road is confirmed, a concept design will be made available for feedback.
