THE ROAR grew louder from Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday afternoon as the Brisbane Lions made it seven wins on the bounce strengthening their defence of the AFLW title.
The Lions came away with a 16-point win over the Gold Coast Suns, 44-28, in another fiery Q-Clash battle.
Gold Coast got within six points early in the final quarter before workhorse Dakota Davidson took a mark and shot the major missile from 20m out.
Putting the Suns to the sword, the ever-consistent Taylor Smith added to the total with a few minutes remaining, imcreasing her lead as the league’s top goal scorer.
Rain began to fall with 10 minutes left to play, but the Lions held off any resurgence from the Suns and showed what they have as a unit and how far they can go in adding to the trophy cabinet.
Belle Dawes (27 disposals) and Ally Anderson (31) controlled the midfield battle, before Charlie Rowbottom – who had 14 of her 21 touches after half-time – lifted to give her Suns teammates some field position.
The Lions move to second on the ladder, tied on 28 points with the Hawthorn Hawks, both with only one loss from eight games played.
With only three rounds of the regular season remaining, the Lions’ remaining games are against Geelong Cats on the road, the Sydney Swans at home and St Kilda Saints on the road in the final round.
The Lions will next play on Sunday afternoon against the 12th placed Cats.
