MARIE Hartfiel lived a life defined by devotion – to her family, her community and the quiet joys that made each day meaningful.

Born at Ipswich Hospital and raised in the peaceful surrounds of Mutdapilly, Marie’s roots ran deep in the region she would always call home.

In 1964, she married John, beginning a union built on mutual respect, care and quiet perseverance. Their love would become the foundation of a family that stood strong through the best and hardest of times.

Marie’s early years were spent working at the Ipswich Woollen Mills, followed by a deeply fulfilling career in home care, where she offered dignity and compassion to those in their later years.

In 1970, the joy of motherhood arrived with the birth of her daughter Janelle – from that moment, her world became firmly centred on her family.

“She was always there,” Janelle said simply. “For my Dad, for me, and her family.”

She remained a strong part of the local community in recent years, volunteering her time to help with the newspaper deliveries for the Local News Group, with daughter Janelle and son-in-law Neville a driving part of its publications’ distribution.

Marie’s passions were simple and pure. She adored gardening – a love she shared with Neville.

She also had a special bond with the family’s cavoodles, especially Milo, who seemed to understand when she fell ill, staying close and gentle.

In early 2024, Marie was diagnosed with a melanoma brain tumour.

Doctors gave her six months, but true to her character, she quietly defied expectations, fighting with dignity and strength for 18 months.

Marie passed away leaving behind a legacy of love. She is survived by John, Janelle and Neville, and four grandchildren – Bridget, William, Darcy and Noah.

A celebration of Marie’s life will be held at 10.30am on Tuesday, July 22, at the Chapel of Ipswich Crematorium.
