HOME-EDUCATING families in Queensland are set to benefit from a significant reform as the State Government backs all eight recommendations of the 2024 independent Home Education Unit Review.
The changes are designed to modernise the state’s home education system, streamline regulatory processes, and provide better support to families, children and young people choosing to learn from home.
Queensland has seen a rapid rise in home education, with more than 11,400 children now registered – a 230 per cent increase over the past five years.
In response to this growth, the Government commissioned a comprehensive review led by Deborah Dunstone, an award-winning education leader recognised for her service in rural and remote communities.
The review was informed by extensive input from home-educating families and the Home Education Expert Group (HEEG), which has worked closely with Ms Dunstone since July 2024.
Under the new plan, the current Home Education Unit will be transformed into Queensland Home Education (QHE), reflecting a broader role that includes both regulatory oversight and practical family support.
An experienced education leader will be appointed to guide the rollout of the reforms and maintain clear communication with the home education community.
Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the reforms reflected the Government’s commitment to parental choice and improved educational support.
Among the key changes are improved templates and reporting tools to help parents meet regulatory requirements more easily, along with a proposed trial for an optional online interview to demonstrate educational progress.
Support for families will also expand through a new advisory platform that provides information on senior pathways, NAPLAN, student opportunities, and access to programs such as regional sports and the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
A review of student identification cards is also planned to ensure home-educated students can access the same discounts and services as their peers in traditional schools.
The existing Home Education Expert Group will be extended through the end of 2025, helping to establish a permanent Queensland Home Education Consultative Group to ensure ongoing parent engagement and feedback.
