AT just 11 years old, Ipswich girl Eleanor Carfrae is showing the community what courage, compassion and love can look like.
In a heartfelt tribute to her late Uncle Matt, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, Eleanor has chosen to shave her head to raise funds and awareness for the Pancare Foundation.
“Watching someone you love go through cancer is really hard, and losing them leaves a big hole in your family,” Eleanor said, her voice steady with resolve.
“I don’t want other kids and families to have to go through that in the future. That’s why I want to help raise money for research and support for people fighting these cancers.”
The bond between Eleanor and her uncle was unshakable.
Matt adored his spirited niece, and she, in turn, cherished every moment with him.
It was this love that inspired Eleanor to take on a challenge she had been thinking about for two years – a bold act to honour his memory and to help others.
Her mother, Kerry Carfrae, admitted the experience has been emotional.
“It has been very moving, and I’ve shed tears more than once,” she said.
“Every donation and comment of support left for Eleanor, and being able to honour Matt in this way, fills me with pride and a touch of sadness.”
Funds raised will support the Pancare Foundation’s patient support services and research programs for Australians diagnosed with upper gastrointestinal cancers – some of the deadliest cancers in the country.
Eleanor’s act is more than a fundraiser, it is a tribute to a cherished uncle, a beacon of hope for families affected by cancer, and a reminder that even the youngest among us can make a lasting difference.
