STAYING fit and healthy doesn’t have to come with an expensive gym membership or the latest fitness gadgets.

National Seniors Australia is encouraging older Australians to focus on simple, sustainable habits that improve health while keeping more money in their pockets.

The organisation says some of the most effective ways to maintain physical and mental wellbeing are either free or cost very little, making healthy ageing accessible regardless of budget.

Walking remains one of the easiest and most beneficial forms of exercise.

Requiring no special equipment, a daily 20 to 30-minute walk can strengthen muscles and bones, improve heart health, boost mental wellbeing and help maintain mobility.

Incorporating walking into everyday life – whether by strolling to the shops, getting off public transport a stop early or taking an evening walk around the neighbourhood – can provide lifelong health benefits without adding to household expenses.

Strength training is another affordable option.

Rather than investing in weights, everyday household items such as water bottles or canned food can be used to build muscle, improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.

Maintaining strength becomes increasingly important with age, helping older Australians remain independent while potentially avoiding costly injuries and medical treatment.

Simple stretching routines, yoga and Pilates can also improve flexibility, joint health and mobility.

While many people associate these activities with expensive classes, National Seniors Australia points out there are countless reputable online resources that allow people to exercise from home at no cost.

Mental health is equally important when it comes to overall wellbeing.

Spending just a few minutes each day practising mindfulness or meditation can reduce stress, improve sleep and support emotional health without requiring paid subscriptions or specialised equipment.

Healthy eating is another area where small lifestyle changes can produce significant long-term benefits.
